EIFF’s In Conversation strand features a range of major filmmaking talent who will discuss their creative careers! All events have been paired with a special retrospective screening of the filmmakers’ past work or a film which has influenced their career.
In Conversation: Ken Loach, Paul Laverty and Rebecca O’Brien – We are thrilled to welcome legendary British filmmaker Ken Loach and his long time creative collaborators, writer Paul Laverty and producer Rebecca O’Brien for a conversation event. The trio will discuss the acclaimed films they have created together over the years including Palme D’Or Winners The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016).

In Conversation: Nia DaCosta – Trailblazing writer/director Nia DaCosta’s diverse body of work spans independent film, franchise remakes & major studio comic adaptations. The Marvels was the highest-grossing film ever directed by a Black female filmmaker & the upcoming 28 Years Later sequel is the latest instalment of the cult horror series. We’re thrilled to welcome Nia to discuss her fascinating career.

In Conversation: Ben Wheatley and Andy Starke – We are joined by the acclaimed director Ben Wheatley (Bulk, Kill List, Sightseers) & his longtime producing partner Andy Starke for an in-depth career conversation in which they will discuss their collaborations, their dynamic & the impressive range of films they have created together.

In Conversation: Andrea Arnold – Award-winning writer/director Andrea Arnold is one of the UK’s most outstanding filmmakers. Her searing debut Red Road won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut in 2006, followed by the critically acclaimed and Cannes Jury Prize winning Fish Tank. Andrea has also created brilliant work in TV, including Transparent & the second season of Big Little Lies. EIFF is thrilled to be welcoming Andrea to Edinburgh to discuss her exceptional career.

In Conversation: Kevin Macdonald and Andrew Macdonald – We are honoured to welcome acclaimed director Kevin Macdonald (High & Low: John Galliano) for a career conversation. He will be joined by his brother, producer Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, Ex Machina) for a wide ranging conversation about filmmaking & their respective careers.

In Conversation: Jeremy Thomas and Mark Cousins – Legendary British film producer Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor) is joined for an in-depth conversation with filmmaker Mark Cousins (The Story of Film: An Odyssey). The session will celebrate Thomas’ life in film, & his rich body of personal, uncompromising work that embodies a fierce spirit of independence in cinema.
