Environment

Overview

Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF), is committed to helping tackle the climate emergency across Scotland by playing our part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping Scotland to transition to a net-zero nation.

EIFF is part of the Green Arts Initiative and is committed to carrying out sustainable practices.

One of EIFF’s core aims is to be an environmentally sustainable business and this approach will be embedded across the organisation; operationally, financially and programmatically.

Our Partnerships

We work in partnership with organisations across the sector to collectively support Scotland to be a more environmentally sustainable nation and deliver transformational and systemic change.

These organisations include: The Green Arts Initiative and The Festivals Edinburgh Environmental Strategy group (made up of Festivals Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh Council, Creative Scotland and Creative Carbon Scotland).

Environmental Sustainability Objectives

• Reduce our organisation’s impact on the environment by: minimising energy use and waste; maximising reuse and recycling; increasing environmental awareness; and addressing other environmental impacts to the greatest extent possible.

• Engage directly with staff, customers, delegates and guests regarding environmental best practice, and encourage them to reduce their own environmental impacts.

• Collaborate with relevant agencies and other festivals, venues and industry partners to develop and implement best practice across the sector.

Our Commitments in Action

• Recycle as much as possible, including food waste, batteries, DVDs, paper, electrical waste and ink toners.

• Minimise unnecessary flights, promote train travel where possible, and advocate for the use of public transport by our team and guests during the festival.

• Provide information on our environmental sustainability practices in all job descriptions and staff contracts as well as EIFF’s Employee Handbook and staff induction manual.

Audience and Partner Engagement

We will promote the use of biodegradable alternatives, move towards a paper-free working environment, and become systematic about communicating our Environmental Policy to new and existing suppliers/partners.

An annual review of the organisation’s performance against the aims set out will be carried out for presentation to the EIFF Board.
