We are joined by the acclaimed director Ben Wheatley and his longtime producing partner Andy Starke for an in-depth career conversation in which they will discuss their collaborations, their dynamic and the impressive range of films they have created together. From breakout horror thriller Kill List to EIFF Midnight Madness Opener Bulk, via hilarious black comedy Sightseers and many more, the films the pair have made together have always surprised and delighted audiences, speaking to a spirit of fearless independence and genre experimentation that is inspiring and exciting.

Access in Filmmaking will provide an in-depth discussion about disability inclusion and access within film projects, with a focus on re-engineering the conversation around these subjects. The panel aims to support development of a more proactive approach to creating accessible production by embedding access into the DNA of projects from the start, supporting barrierless productions and enabling disabled and non-disabled creatives to freely, frequently and confidently collaborate with each other.

Legendary British film producer Jeremy Thomas is joined for an in-depth conversation with filmmaker Mark Cousins. The pair will discuss the many iconic films and filmmakers Thomas has worked with, from his breakout collaborations with Jerzy Skolimowski (The Shout) and Nicolas Roeg (Bad Timing, also screening at EIFF), via iconic films with Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor), to recent work with Takeshi Miike (Thirteen Assassins) and Matteo Garrone (Pinocchio). The session will celebrate Thomas’ life in film, and his rich body of personal, uncompromising work that embodies a fierce spirit of independence in cinema.

Trailblazing American writer/director Nia DaCosta’s diverse body of work spans independent film, franchise remakes and major studio comic adaptations. The Marvels was the highest-grossing film ever directed by a Black female filmmaker, the remake of Candyman was a box office smash and upcoming sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the latest instalment of the cult independent horror series. EIFF is thrilled to welcome Nia to Edinburgh to discuss her fascinating career.

Award-winning writer/director Andrea Arnold is one of the UK’s most outstanding filmmakers, starting her career with notable short films Milk, Dog and the Academy Award winning Wasp. Her searing debut feature Red Road, also screening at EIFF this year, won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut in 2006, followed by the critically acclaimed and Cannes Jury Prize winning Fish Tank (which also won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film) and American Honey. Cow and, most recently, Bird, were both nominated for BAFTAs. Andrea has also created brilliant work in television, including Transparent, I Love Dick and the second season of Big Little Lies. EIFF is thrilled to be welcoming Andrea to Edinburgh to discuss her exceptional career, and to present a special screening of Scottish classic Red Road.
